Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said that it is for the government to decide Whether they want to release former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi or not. However his party said that they will oppose any such move.
“It is up to the government to decide, I won’t give my personal opinion,” Gandhi said in a statement.
Meanwhile Congress Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam nabi Azad said that party will oppose Tamil nadu Govt’s move to release the killers.
“Congress party will oppose any such move” he said to reporters outside Parliament House.
The Tamil Nadu Government has sought the opinion of the ministry of home affairs on releasing all convicts in the case.
In a letter to union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi, Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary K. Gnanadesikan said the state government had received petitions from the seven convicts requesting their release as they had spent over 24 years in jail.
The seven convicts are V. Sriharan alias Murugan, T. Suthendraraja alias Santhan, A.G. Perarivalan, Jayakumar, Robert Payas, Ravichandran and Nalini Sriharan, wife of Murugan.
All seven have been in prison since 1991, the year a woman Tamil Tiger suicide bomber blew up Rajiv Gandhi at an election rally near Chennai.
