The Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston created the history in medical science as it performed United States’ first penis transplant successfully.
According to reports, the surgery was performed over a 64-year-old Thomas Manning who lost his penis to cancer in 2012.
It was a 15-hour-long groundbreaking surgery and was performed by a team of over 50 surgeons.
Reports suggest, Manning is expected to regain normal urination and sexual function in the next few months. However, he will not be able to have children as he has not received new testes.
A press release issued by hospital officials says “although penile injuries are not always fatal, “the psychological aspects of such an injury can be overwhelming.”
The world’s first successful penile transplantation was pulled off at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, in December 2014.
