Bombay High Court on Friday granted bail to Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, and even suspended the sentence awarded.
Two days after the conviction of Salman Khan in the 2002 hit-and-run case, the Bombay High Court on Friday granted bail to the Bollywood superstar, and even suspended the sentence awarded by the session court in Mumbai.
The High Court asked the actor to surrender before the trial court and furnish a fresh bail bond of Rs 30,000. The date for the next hearing in the case has been scheduled for July 15.
Soon after the decision by the Bombay High Court, fans standing outside the court began sloganeering and cheering outside the court premises. According to reports, Salman Khan’s sister Alvira Khan burst into tears of joy soon after the decision of the high court.
Earlier, Justice Abhay Thipsay of the Bombay High Court asked the public prosecutor in the case why the actor’s punishment should not be suspended.
There were also reports of a Salman Khan fan attempting suicide outside the Bombay HC, and was rushed to a nearby hospital.
“He has been on bail for a long time and his liberty was not curtailed. Normally, in such cases, the appeal is admitted and an accused is granted bail,” Justice Abhay Thipsay said, while staying his conviction and granting him bail.
Thipsay had on May 6 granted 48-hour interim bail to the actor, hours after he was convicted and sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment by the trial court on the ground that he had not been supplied with a detailed order explaining the reasons for his conviction.
