NWI Exclusive: Water Scarcity Claims Lives In Beed, Authorities Turn A Blind Eye | NWI

Maharashtra’s Marathwada is facing the worst drought in half-a-century. Seven dams in the region have dried up and people are travelling to long distances in search of water.

One of the worst affected areas in the region is Beed district, which is facing acute shortage of water. The condition is so severe that not only elders but even the children are dying due to the dry spell.

Maharashtra’s third largest and Beed district’s largest dam- Manjara, which used to supply water to Latur and Beed for irrigation, drinking and industrial activities, is all dried up.

Despite of having political connections with Maharashtra state’s Rural Development and Women and Child Welfare Minister Pankaja Munde, Beed has got no respite from the dry spell.

The situation has claimed many young lives till now, but still the village hasn’t yet got any support system to rely on.

The only thing visible is the politics that is being done in the name of supplying water tankers to this parched district.

People in this area have no means of earning their livelihood as their farms are lying barren since past 4 years.

While the politicians are busy making excuses sitting under their air-conditioned roofs, innocent lives in Beed continue to suffer and die.
