As the summer has just begun, the water level at Tehri lake has fallen so much that motorboats are not able to function. People are now travelling additional 45 km as their is no transport over water available.
Reportedly, the officials claimed that the level of water in the Uttarakhand’s Tehri Dam is much below the level recorded at this time during previous years. For the first time in 10 years, Tehri Dam has recorded decline in the water level from 760 meters to 743.5 meters. Such situations usually occur in May, when the lake is at its lowest water level of 740 meters.
Tehri dam generates an average of 386 million units of energy each year from the water of Bhagirathi river of Uttarakhand, however this time it has recorded a low of 205 million units only.
According to Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC) general manager HL Arora, this is happening due to the effect of weather on the lake. Usually the water level of the lake in April lasts around 760 meters, but this time it has been reduced by 16 meters.
