Taking a major step to clean the ‘parking mafia’, the Noida Authority has decided to revise parking rates.
As per the new rates, effective from January 16, commuters will have to pay a full-day flat rate for parking between 9 am and 11 pm. While four-wheelers will be charged Rs 20, two-wheelers will have to pay Rs 10, according to a Times Of India report
Currently, four-wheelers are being charged Rs 10 for first two hours and Rs 5 for every additional hour. Two-wheelers are being levied Rs 5 for two hours and Rs 5 for every extra hour. An additional service tax of 14.5% is also charged as part of parking fees.
Earlier, the Allahabad High Court also directed the authority to take stern action against “parking mafia” involved in running unauthorized parking lots and illegal collection of parking fees from commuters.
A division bench, comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice Yashwant Varma, passed the order on a Public Interest Litigation filed by Shrikant Vaidya, a resident of Sector 16 in Noida.
The petitioner has alleged that the “parking mafia” has been running unauthorized parking lots at public parks and on the roadside where “inflated parking fees” was being collected from those who parked their vehicles and the receipts given to car owners did not bear any numbers or details of the contractor.
The petitioner has also alleged that neither the Noida police nor other administrative officials were taking any action against the “parking mafia”.
The court, while directing the Noida Authority to take action against those involved in the illegal business, also sought an affidavit containing details of authorized parking lots and the contractors who have been given contracts for running these.
