A minor Dalit girl, allegedly raped by her father in Kanpur, has been denied abortion by her doctor saying it could pose a risk to her life, according to reports.
On July 16, the 16-year-old victim’s father was arrested and sent to jail after the girl and her elder brother (18) filed a complaint with the Babupurwa police station, Station House Officer Ramveer Singh said, the Indian Express reported.

The victim was later shifted to a government shelter home for women in Kanpur after her brother expressed his inability to bear her responsibility owing to financial constraints.
The girl’s medical examination that was conducted on July 20 revealed that she was 23 weeks and two days pregnant.

Thereafter, the girl and her brother requested the police for abortion. However, after consulting with a doctor, the permission was denied citing risk to her life, Investigating Office of the case, Sub Inspector Savita Sengar said, adding that, “He requested to shift his sister to any government shelter home till her delivery. He, however, is ready to keep her after the delivery.”
