In yet another incident of militants targeting a communication facility in Kashmir, a grenade was on Monday thrown at a mobile phone tower in a downtown locality of Srinagar, causing panic in the area.
The attack took place at Gadood Bagh area of Srinagar’s Habba Kadal in which one person was injured, said police.
“Gunmen lobbed a hand grenade at a cell phone tower, injuring one person,” a senior police officer told reporters.
The injured has been identified as Imtiyaz Ahmad Ahanger – brother of the tower’s owner – and a resident of the Gadood Bagh area of Habakadal locality in Srinagar city.
Last week, two civilians associated with cell phone business were killed in north Kashmir, resulting in disruption of telecommunication services in many parts of Sopore town and its adjoining areas.
Lesser-known guerrilla outfit ‘Lashkar-e-Islam’ had claimed responsibility for the attack and issued threats to service providers to wind up their operations in Kashmir.
