The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay are the two scientific research and higher education institutions from India that are among the top 30 in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) BRICS and Emerging Economies Ranking 2016. THE is a London-based university ranking agency.
IISc Bangalore has climbed nine places to 16th spot, while IIT-Bombay has ranked 29 this year, up from 37 last year.
Overall, 16 Indian universities have found place in the top 200 list. “India takes 16 places in this year’s ranking with the IISc making its debut in the top 20 (16th) and IIT Bombay, the top 30 (29th),” THE said in its study released on Wednesday.

The criteria on which the institute was ranked were: reputation a university with employers (weighted at 30 per cent), alumni outcome (20 per cent), employer partnerships (25 per cent), employer presence on campus (15 per cent) and graduate employment rate (10 per cent).
IIT-Bombay has scored 37.8 per cent in teaching and a low 28.6 per cent in research. Last year, IIT Bombay had scored 19.5 per cent in international outlook, 49.7 per cent in industry income, 43.5 per cent in citations, 34. 2 per cent in teaching and 24.6 per cent in research.
“We are happy with the continuous progress that we are making in the world rankings. In the past, we have affirmed our dominance in the country as a leading institute in the field of engineering, and now we are proving that we are one of the best in the world as well,” Professor Devang V Khakhar, IIT-Bombay Director, said.
