The 17-year-old boy, who was once captured on camera with Mahatma Gandhi years back, now lives in an old-age home in Delhi.
The 87-year-old Kanubhai Ramdas Gandhi, son of Bapu’s third son Ramdas, was living in the United States with his 85-year-old wife Dr. Shiva Laxmi before he shifted back to India.
He shifted back to India in 2014 to unite with his people, but instead he landed up in a home for old and homeless.
Gandhi’s grandson, who once studied at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and worked with NASA, now lives on the outskirts of Delhi with over 100 inmates at the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram.
The couple shares a single air-conditioned room, which is normally used as an ICU, with other inmates.
Remembering the good old days, Kanubhai says, “There are a lot of memories.I used to sit in Bapu’s lap & pull his hair, but he’d still smile at me and wrap me in his arms.”
“Bapu always wanted me to serve people, he wanted me to take all the pain of people and spread happiness.”
“Gandhiji had such a great & pure personality that it’s obvious that people will use his name for politics,” he shares.
