Eyeing their eight title of the season and as a team, Indian tennis player Sania Mirza and her Swiss partner Martina Hingis entered the semi-finals of the China Open in Beijing on Thursday.
Fresh from their Wuhan Open triumph last week, the top seeds prevailed over the German-Czech pair of Julia Goerges and Karolina Pliskova 7-6 (5), 6-4 in their quarterfinal match that lasted lasted an hour and 20 minutes. The Indo-Swiss combination has bagged seven women’s doubles titles thus far this year, including two Grand Slams –Wimbledon and the US Open — since they teamed up in March.
Their other WTA titles this year together include Indian Wells, Miami, Charleston, Guangzhou, and Wuhan.
Mirza and Hingis have won their last three tournaments without dropping a single set, but if they go on to win the China Open, it won’t be without the loss of a set, as the pair dropped the first set 1-6 to Italians Flavia Pennetta and Sara Errani in their second-round encounter on Wednesday.
