The Supreme Court ordered a ban on Wednesday the registration of new diesel luxury cars and SUVs with an engine capacity of over 2000cc or more until March 31, 2016 in the capital.
Main highlights of the order:
* This ban will be imposed on the entire National Capital Region (NCR)
* SC asked all the private cabs operating in the city to convert to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) by March, 2016
* Ban on vehicles over 2000 cc or more effectively stops the sale of Mahindra & Mahindra’s Scorpio, Toyota’s Innova, Tata Safari, Tata Sumo, and Mitsubishi Pajero during the ban period, However, existing diesel cars can continue to ply
* Sales of luxury car-makers’ best-selling cars which are mostly diesel-driven, for example, the smallest diesel engine for segment leader Mercedes is 2,143cc, will witness a decline
* Govt hikes excise duty on petrol by 30 paise a litre, diesel by Rs 1.17 per litre to mop up Rs 2,500 cr
* SC raised by the ‘Green cess’ being levied on commercial vehicles entering Delhi by 100 per cent
* Commercial vehicles, which are not Delhi-bound, will not be allowed to enter national capital through entry points NH-8 and NH-1
* Commercial vehicles registered before 2005 cannot enter Delhi
