31 athletes, who competed at the 2008 Olympic Games, have tested positive for doping after samples were retested, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced Tuesday.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) retested 454 selected doping samples from the Olympic Games Beijing 2008.

“Proceedings against athletes who have infringed anti-doping rules will begin immediately and all will be banned from the Rio Games,” said an IOC statement.

“The fight to protect the clean athletes does not stop there, with 250 more results from retesting of samples from the Olympic Games London 2012 to come shortly,” IOA president Thomas Bach said.

“The aim is to stop any drugs cheats coming to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro,” Bach added.
