Winter Session Of Parliament (Day 2): Govt Expects Support On GST Bill | News World India

Congress on Thursday listed three issues, calling them non-negotiable while extending any support to help the government to pass the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill, touted as the biggest reform measure since independence.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi, said there will be no compromise on the 1% tax for manufacturers, the constitutional cap of 18% for GST rate and an independent dispute resolution mechanism. “Unless the government responds on this, we will not compromise,” they said.

Earlier, leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday warned of bloodshed if Narendra Modi-led NDA Government in Centre attempts to change the constitution of India.

“There will be bloodshed if an attempt is made to change the Constitution” Mallikarjun Kharge said on the floor of the house during the first day of the Parliament winter session.

Meanwhile, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan ordered to expunge the word “rakhtpaat” (bloodshed) from Parliament proceedings record and called it ‘unparliamentary’.

Sonia also targeted the Narendra Modi government during a debate in parliament, saying that the principles that inspired the country for decades were being “deliberately attacked”.

“Today is a day of happiness but there is also pain. The principles that inspired (us) for decades, a danger is lurking over them. They are being deliberately attacked,” Congress President said.

“The people who have no faith in constitution, who have not contributed to its making, they are talking about it repeatedly, are trying to appropriate it. There cannot be a bigger joke,” she added.
