An official says Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza has returned to the presidential palace in the capital and is about to address the nation after a coup attempt fizzled out.
Presidential spokesman Gervais Abayeho, said Friday that Nkurunziza drove from the north of the country in Ngozi, where he was greeted by hordes of supporters.
Weeks of protests in Burundi’s capital over Nkurunziza’s bid for a third term in office boiled over Wednesday when Maj. Gen. Godefroid Niyombare, a former intelligence chief, announced a coup.
President Nkurunziza was attending a regional heads of state meeting in Tanzania to address the crisis in his country when coup attempt was made.
