Schools and colleges will remain shut in Puducherry, Chennai and adjoining districts Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur as heavy rain is expected in most parts of Tamil Nadu. However the cyclone threat is over, say authorities.
Deputy Director of the Meteorological Department, S. R. Ramanan, told ANI that the depression in the Bay of Bengal is 110 kilometres away from land. It is expected to make landfall between 12 to 2:30 p.m. close to Puducherry.
– The Pondicherry University will remain closed as a holiday has been declared due to incessant rain.
– The Met Department advised fishermen not to venture into the sea until high waters recede.
– Violent winds with a speed of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour are expected to prevail over the northern parts of Tamil Nadu.
– Under the influence of the cyclonic storm, rainfall is expected in most parts of Tamil Nadu with heavy to very heavy rainfall over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the next 24-48 hours.
– Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph would prevail along and off north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining Pudukkottai and Ramanathapuram districts of south Tamil Nadu coasts during next 12 hrs.
– People living in low lying and coastal areas in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur and Puducherry have been advised to shift to safer places.
