Both ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and opposition National Conference are on the same page for the issue and said that different treatment to Kashmiris highlight the ‘perception of discrimination’ in Union Government for the people of Kashmir.

“The system cannot differentiate based on biased presumptions and politics and that such glaring double standards between Memon’s and Guru’s cases highlighted the
perception of discrimination among the people of Kashmir,” NC Chief Spokesperson Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi said here.

Mehdi said the system of justice cannot have different interpretations for different people.

“How can you justify not handing over the body of Guru to his family when you handed over the body of Memon to his family? The system of justice cannot have different interpretations for different people.

“What justice is it to deprive a young child of the dead body of his father?,” he asked.

“NC working president (and former chief minister) Omar Abdullah had written to the then Prime Minister of India demanding the return of Guru’s mortal remains and the party has repeatedly raised this demand even on the floor of the Legislative Assembly,” he said.

The NC chief spokesperson said the party would continue to raise the demand and would exhaust all possible options to pursue this cause of justice.

Ruling People’s Democratic Party too echoed the same voices impressed upon central governemnt to handover the mortal remains of Afzal Guru.

“Dead bodies don’t do any harm and I think government should have now no problem in handing over his body,” PDP chief spokesperson Mehboob Beg said.

Unlike Yakub Memon, Afzal Guru was secretly hanged on February 9, 2013, for his role in December 2001 terrorist attack on parliament, and buried inside high security Tihar prison in New Delhi. Since then every years people in Kashmir observe complete shutdown on this day and impress upon Union government to handover his mortal remains.
