The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended the earlier ban on the registration and sale of new diesel vehicles above the capacity of 2,000cc in the capital.

Auto majors Toyota, Mahindra & Mahindra and Mercedes-Benz on Monday moved the Supreme Court against the ban on fresh registration of diesel vehicles in the national capital and National Capital Region (NCR).
The carmakers had argued that their models were environment-friendly as they adhered to emission norms.

Toyota cited its hybrid models (Prius) priced at about Rs 40 lakh, as a case in point while Mahindra indicated about its electric model Reva.
The court asked the Delhi government not to deny NOC to 10-year-old diesel vehicles and 16-year-old petrol vehicles being sold outside NCR.
The court has banned the entry of heavy commercial vehicles from four additional entry points NH 2, 10, 58 and state highway 57 into Delhi. It, however, allowed entry of heavy commercial vehicles which are Delhi-bound on the payment of green tax.
The apex court had issued a ban on registration of any new diesel cars in the capital and NCR region till March 31, 2016 to curb dangerously high levels of pollution.
