Pentagon Lifts Ban, Allows Transgenders To Serve In US Military
The Pentagon on Thursday lifted the long-standing ban and allowed transgender people to serve openly in the U.S. military.

The Pentagon on Thursday lifted the long-standing ban and allowed transgender people to serve openly in the U.S. military.

“I am announcing today that we are ending the ban on transgender Americans in the United States military,” said Ash Carter, secretary of Defense, in a news conference.

“Effective immediately, transgender Americans can serve openly, and they no longer can be discharged or otherwise separated from the military just for being transgender.”

Under the new policy, transgender troops would receive any medically necessary care including surgery, Carter said.
