Even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping on the
sidelines of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Tashkent today, the members of Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) will meet at a special meeting in Seoul to discuss India’s membership in the group tonight.
According to reports, the membership issue was already raised during the plenary session of the NSG held earlier in Seoul.
In a series of statements this week, China has maintained that the issue of the membership of non-NPT countries like India is not on the agenda in Seoul, however, it is understood that several countries have stood-up to raise the issue at the plenary session.
While United States, United Kingdom and France have supported India’s bid and called on other nations in the 28 member bloc to support the country, others including Russia, Switzerland and Mexico too have extended their support.
However, China on the other hand has raised doubts regarding extension of the membership of the coveted bloc citing various reasons.
The final decision on the issue may not be known till Friday when the group is expected to issue a statement on the plenary.
