Hurricane Matthew Causes Devastation in Haiti

Hurricane Matthew may have moved on to hit USA, yet it’s devastating effects are far from over in Haiti, where the death toll has risen to 877 while another tens of thousands have become homeless and outbreaks of cholera rise. As communication systems improve, information from distant and remote areas increase the death toll even after the storm has moved on.

Damaging homes, Hurricane Matthew razed many down to their foundations and also damaged sanitation infrastructure which combined with flood water is the likely cause of the cholera outbreak. According to a statement by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), cases of cholera are expected to rise through the normal rainy season until the start of 2017.
