On Friday, Voluntary firefighters, who had camped in southern Russia to help tackle forest fires, were attacked by masked, armed individuals.
The assailants, who were equipped with batons, guns and knives, attacked the Greenpeace volunteers at night while they were camping and also damaged their encampment and vehicles.
The firefighters, who had received several injuries, were moved to a hospital for treatment.
Ever since the government shrunk the funding for fire fighting authorities, volunteers have been helping out with forest fires.
Firefighting volunteers coordinator Grigory Kuksin (Greenpeace Russia) on Friday said, “They said if we don’t get out of here till the morning, no one will ever find us, (they said) we should get the hell out of here to `our America.”
Greenpeace and other NGOs are perceived as western spies who are trying to infiltrate the country by the Cossack militia.
