New British foreign minister and top Brexit backer Boris Johnson on Monday said that Britain would continue to play a leading role in Europe.
Johnson said “We have to give effect to the will of the people and leave the European Union but … we are not going in any way to abandon our leading role in European participation.”
Johnson made the statement as he arrives for an EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels.
Mr Johnson, who led the campaign for Britain to leave the EU, will also meet with US Secretary of State John Kerry.
Ministers will discuss the Nice attacks and the defeated coup in Turkey but have stressed there will be no formal discussions about Britain’s EU exit.
