Indian athlete OP Jaisha, who represented India at Rio Olympics 2016, reveals the reason behind her collapse during the marathon.
The athlete claims that water was available only every 8 kms at the marathon.
“The first half went well but, the second half became really difficult because it was a very hot day, temperature was around 48-49℃,” says Jaisha.
“Even in a local marathon there is adequate availability of refreshments & water, which is extremely important,” she added.
The athlete reported that while every other country had made the necessary arrangements for their athletes, there were no officials at the designated points to provide her with refreshments and water.
“The Indian flag was nowhere to be seen (during marathon). Looking at the Tricolour gives you a kind of power. People were carrying flags of their countries to encourage their runners, but there was no one to encourage me and Kavita,” she says.
“I would have made it 101%, had I got water & refreshments on time during the marathon,” she added.
