On Saturday, India’s Neeraj Chopra made us proud at the IAAF World U20 Athletics Championships by setting a new world record of 86.48m for javelin throw in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

While Chopra grabbed gold, Johan Grobler from South Africa took the silver medal (80.59m) and Granada’s Anderson Peters (79.65m) took bronze.

The Indian athlete set a new record at his second throw after his first effort that landed at 79.66m. While his fourth attempt was considered a foul, his third attempt measured a splendid 78.36m.

The last record of 84.69m was held by Zigismunds Sirmais from Latvia in 2011.

This is said to be the first world record by an Indian in athletics.
