Bastian Schweinsteiger failed to hold back his tears on Wednesday as Germany’s captain made his final international appearance in 2-0 friendly win at home vs Finland.
During the presentation ceremony, Schweinsteiger was left in tears.
“I didn’t think that would happen,” Schweinsteiger admitted, referring to his tears, when handed a microphone during presentation.
While addressing the crowd Schweinsteiger said, “Thank you for coming, it means a lot to me. It was a huge honour for me to play for Germany and I just want to say ‘thank you’ for everything.”
The Manchester United midfielder made his Germany debut in June 2004 and ends his international career with 121 caps and 24 goals.
He was part of Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning squad and retires as Germany’s fourth most-capped player of all time.
