In a rare surgery, Doctors in India have replaced the disfigured nose of a 12-year-old boy ‘ Arun Patel’ with a new one that was grown on his forehead, the rare procedure was completed in a four-phased plastic surgery.
According to reports, Arun lost his nose to pneumonia as an infant after the infection destroyed his cartilage.
Side effects of the treatment provided to him in the form of an injection, by doctors in a Madhya Pradesh village, eventually damaged his nose completely.
Now he has got this new nose almost after a decade.
The surgical team, led by Dr Ashwini Dash, took almost a year to finish the process of growing this new nose.
According to International Business Times, the four-phased procedure began with doctors infusing a special silicon tissue expander into the boy’s forehead which forces the skin and tissue to grow more than it should.
“(We were) confident that the new nose would work properly like his other organs,” Dash told BBC Hindi.
The second phase involved taking cartilage from his chest to create a new nose.
The doctors removed the artificial nose in the third phase and implanted it on his face. The final phase involved repairing his forehead.
