Police on Wednesday resorted to lathi-charge to disperse students protesting against the scholarship scam in Patna.

Earlier this year, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar admitted ‘irregularities’ in distribution of the post-matric scholarship among the SC/ST students pursuing technical education outside Bihar and informed the assembly that the matter was being thoroughly investigated by the state’s vigilance department.

The alleged fraudulent withdrawal of crores of rupees came into light after altogether 60 SC students of East Champaran district who had been pursuing technical education at Bhubaneshwar-based Raajdhani Engineering College informed the Bihar government that they had not received scholarship amount for the last financial year and facing ouster from the college.

These students had also threatened to commit suicide if their cases were not taken up.
