Someone Calling A Govt Corrupt Or Unfit Can't Be Slapped With Defamation Prosecution, Says SC

The Supreme Court on Thursday said that Defamation law can’t be used as a political counter weapon.

The Supreme Court on Thursday said that Defamation law can’t be used as a political counter weapon.

The observation came on a petition challenging a non-bailable warrant issued against DMDK chief Captain Vijaykanth by a Tirupur court in a defamation case.

The SC stayed the warrant and said “Someone calling a Govt corrupt or unfit can’t be slapped with defamation prosecution.”

In the past, the Tamil Nadu government has filed a number of cases against opposition parties and media houses for criticism.
