Dealing a blow to BJP in Punjab, Navjot Singh Sidhu on Monday resigned from Rajya Sabha just three months after his nomination by the Modi government with the Aam Aadmi Party giving indications that he may be made the party’s face in the assembly elections next year.
However, now two Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab leaders said that cricketer-turned-politician will join the AAP but will not contest the assembly polls, also will not be projected as the chief ministerial face.
As per a report in Hindustan Times, AAP’s state convener Sucha Singh Chhotepur said, “Our high command has made it amply clear that Sidhu will join the party and campaign. The question of how he will fare as the CM face does not arise.”
Sangrur MP and AAP campaign committee in-charge Bhagwant Mann said that Sidhu will join and campaign, however “he will not contest, hence cannot be the CM candidate of the party in the run-up to the elections”.
Earlier When asked, AAP’s senior spokesperson Ashutosh about Sidhu joining the party even as it clarified that no two family members can be office-bearers or contest polls at the same time, he praised Sidhu, saying he has always been a “fan” of the cricketer-turned-politician. “But how can I reply on his behalf.”
“I have been his fan and he has redefined commentary. In politics, he defeated a heavyweight and was elected to the Lok Sabha,” Ashutosh said.
Pressed further, he added that according to the party constitution, two members of the same family cannot be office bearers or contest polls.
While party sources maintain that Sidhu and his wife will join within next week, they indicated that he may not be the CM face but could be the main campaigner in the Punjab Assembly elections next year.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has praised Sidhu’s decision to quit from Rajya Sabha although he suggested that talks of him becoming the face of AAP in Punjab would be premature.
