Shiv Sena MLAs held a protest outside the Maharashtra Assembly on Tuesday, opposing the demand for a separate Vidarbha state.
Over the years, supporters of Vidarbha statehood have held many protests.
The demand for a separate state was raised for the first time over 100 years ago. As a result of which, the Central Provinces legislature passed a unanimous resolution to create a separate state of ‘Mahavidarbha’ on 1 October 1938 at Nagpur.
This was much before the demand for a “Samyukta Maharashtra” was even conceived.
Vidarbha constitutes the eastern regions of the state of Maharashtra including the districts of Buldhana, Akola, Washim, Amravati, Yavatmal, Wardha, Nagpur, Chandrapur, Bhandara, Gondia and Gadchiroli.
