On Day 7 of the Parliament Winter Session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his first appearance in Rajya Sabha after repeated demands from the Opposition that he participate in debate over the demonetisation issue. His appearance in Rajya Sabha, although was only for a short duration.
The first 6 days of Parliament were adjourned repeatedly as the Opposition insisted on PM Modi’s presence in Parliament to discuss the demonetisation issue. Protests against demonetisation created furore in both Houses.
As per reports, PM Modi did attend the Rajya Sabha session, however, he did not speak. The Rajya Sabha debate which began with former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh included speakers Derek O’Brien (TMC) and Naresh Agrawal from Samajwadi Party as all speakers highlighted the problems and consequences resulting from the sudden demonetisation decision.
Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2 PM for lunch and MPs were no doubt expecting to hear from PM Modi after the House reassembled, but PM Modi left the Rajya Sabha without speaking, sparking further furore.
