Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called a cabinet meet on Thursday night to take stock of the situation which has led to a logjam in the Parliament since last six days.
The meeting is being held in the wake of the Opposition unitedly attacking the Modi government over the demonetisation move.
After continuous adjournments of both Houses of the Parliament since last six days, PM Modi made his first appearance in Rajya Sabha on Thursday after repeated demands from the Opposition that he participate in debate over the demonetisation issue. His appearance in Rajya Sabha, although was only for a short duration.
Ghulam Nabi Azad, the leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, had said his party won’t allow the House to function if the Prime Minister skipped the discussion. Reacting to Opposition’s obstinate resolve to disrupt Parliament proceedings since the past few days, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said they are inventing reasons for running away from debate, adding that the Opposition is not keen on debating the issue. His comment triggered an uproar in the House and Opposition MPs began to chant: “Pradhan Mantri bhagh gaya“.
The first six days of Parliament were adjourned repeatedly as the Opposition insisted on PM Modi’s presence in Parliament to discuss the demonetisation issue. Protests against demonetisation created furore in both Houses.
