Activists of the Karni Sena group that had earlier assaulted Bollywood filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali during shooting of Padmavati, last night shattered mirrors in the Padmini Mahal of the 13th century Chittorgarh Fort of Rajasthan.
Posing as tourists the activists passed by the security guard but later the Karni Sena claimed responsibility for the vandalism. The activist group had earlier warned that the mirrors would be destroyed if they were not removed as they felt the mirrors misrepresent the story of the legendary Rajput Queen Padmini.
According to legends, Queen Padmini committed ‘Jauhar’ or self-immolation to protect her honour rather than submit to the Muslim Sultan of Delhi Alauddin Khilji who attacked the Kingdom of Chittorgarh in 1303 to capture the queen famous for her beauty. The mirrors in the Padmini Mahal are shown to tourists to represent how Alauddin Khilji saw the queen once as part of a compromise with her husband, the King Rana Ratan Singh.
Karni Sena activists however say that it’s wrong to say that the face of the beautiful queen was ever shown to Khilji and that mirrors did not even exist at that time period.
The same Karni Sena had assaulted Bollywood filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali during the shoot of his upcoming period drama ‘Padmavati’ which is based on the story of Queen Padmini. The activists accused Bhansali of shooting a dream sequence depicting a romantic relation between Pamini (played by Deepika Padukone) and Alauddin Khilji (played by Ranveer Singh) although Bhansali denied inclusion of such a scene in his movie.
A case has been filed regarding the vandalism to the Chittorgarh Fort.
