The Union Government’s Ministry of Urban Development will felicitate a 50-year-old sanitary worker B. Nagaraj from Coimbatore for his services in the field of garbage collection and segregation.
As per the letter that announced the felicitation for Nagaraj, “The Ministry of Urban Development realises that as part of the effort to improve sanitation and solid waste management in cities, individuals such as safai karamcharis and sanitary workers play a considerable role in the daily diligence for the same.”
Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner K. Vijayakarthikeyan said that from the time of implementation of ‘Shunya’ zero-waste project in Ward 23 in October 2013, Mr. Nagaraj worked with dedication to achieve maximum collection of recyclable waste.
Zonal Sanitary Officer of the area S. Radhakrishnan said that the worker went about religiously collecting waste.
Under the Shunya project, a private company bought recyclable waste from these conservancy workers for Rs. 4 per kg.
