For concerted efforts to clean Delhi’s severe air-quality, the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) on Thursday prescribed the state of “environment emergency” subject to threshold and directed emergency measures to be taken if pollution level increases further.

The tribunal also directed temporary shut-down of thermal power plants and closure of all construction activities to curb pollution in the state and adjoining areas.

Earlier on Wednesday, the chairman of NGT had said that the tribunal will constitute a joint committee of Delhi, Haryana Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh that will be charged with enforcing NGT’s orders to tackle air-pollution.
