The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to hear a plea challenging the validity of abortion laws in India.
The petition that was file by a women in the 24th week of her pregnancy says that the current laws deny women’s right to abort in case of extraordinary medical complication.
The plea also challenges the constitutional validity of Section 3(2) of medical termination of pregnancy act 1971 that prescribes a ceiling of 20 weeks for termination.
The petition argues that the current capping is unreasonable and violative to life and equality.
The petitioner in her petition has sought to declare the revelant sections unconstitutional
or read down.
The apex court will hear the matter on Thursday.
