In a fresh controversy over the caste of Rohith Vemula, Guntur district collector Kantilal Dande has ordered a fresh probe to determine whether he was a Dalit or not.
According to TOI, the collector said that the issue is shrouded in “ambiguity” and needs to be probed afresh.
The Hindu reports, the community certificates of Vemula were issued in 2005 and 2014, stating that he belonged to SC Hindu (Mala).
However, Rohith’s estranged father and grandfather have claimed that he belonged to Vaddera (BC) community.
The Cyberabad police had already filed cases under Prevention of SC/ST Atrocities Act against five persons, including Vice-Chancellor P. Appa Rao and Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya.
Rohith Vemula was an Indian PhD student at the University of Hyderabad who committed suicide on 17 January 2016.
The controversy over around Rohith’s caste first started two days after his death after a caste certificate signed by Vemula’s mother surfaced in several media reports.
