Number of tourists per hour and their stay time inside the monument should be reduced to save the 17th century monument Taj Mahal, National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), which was tasked by ASI to prepare a report and suggest ways to tackle the problem, said.

NEERI in its draft report has suggested that that at no point of time there should be more than 9,000 tourists inside the monument, while the hourly entry rate should be 6,000 tourists.

It also recommended that the visit duration inside the premises should be limited to one-and-a-half hours. These recommendations are to be implemented only on weekends and on special days such as festivals and long holidays, as things are manageable during the rest of the year.
