Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Sunday inaugurated the nation’s first ‘Green Train Corridor’ between Rameshwaram and Manamadurai.
Ten passenger trains consisting of 286 coaches moving on the 114-km-long section have been provided with discharge-free bio-toilets.
Railways ministry has decided to provide discharge free bio-toilet in all its coaches which would be completed by September 2019.
The ministry has already provided 40,750 bio-toilets in its coaches till June 30 and would install additional 30,000 bio-toilets by the end of financial year.
Indian Railways have developed environment-friendly bio-toilets for its coaches in association with Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO).
