A National level athlete, Puja Kumari (20) died after falling into a pond while attempting to take a selfie at the Sports Authority India (SAI) Regional Centre, Bhopal on Saturday.
The incident took place around 6:30pm near a harvesting centre when after returning from practice, the athlete and her friends attempted to take a picture of some fishes in the pond.
Kumari slipped at the edge and fell into the pond where she drowned as she could not swim. Her two friends, Neha and Preeti, who didn’t know how to swim either, ran back to the hostel to get help.
After Puja was pulled out of the pond, she was taken to Chirayu Hospital but, she’d already died.
“My staff tried to save the girl, it’s unfortunate,” said Meena Vora, Director SAI CRC, Bhopal.
“Police will investigate and accordingly, I will act. We ask the athletes to not to go near the lake. She wanted to get clicked after seeing the fishes in the lake. There seems to be no medical negligence. We have informed her family,” she added.
The athlete had been living at the SAI Academy for three years. Last year in August at the Federation Cup Athletics Championships, Puja won the silver medal in 3000m steeplechase.
