Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday wrote letter to CM of Tamil Nadu Jayalalithaa over violent protests in the state.

On Monday, Karnataka again woke up to a violent day, massive protests erupted on the streets of Bengaluru and Mysuru, after Supreme Court directed the Karnataka government to release 12,000 cusecs of water to
Tamil Nadu daily till September 20

The apex court passed the order in response to an appeal filed by the Karnataka government seeking a direction to reduce the quantum of water to be released from Cauvery river to Tamil Nadu from 15,000 cusecs to 10,000 cusecs.

The court also criticised protests in the past few days in Karnataka, saying “citizens cannot become a law unto themselves”.

However, protesters appeared to defy this warning. Armed reserve police spread out across the city to check violence.

Buses were stopped from heading to Tamil Nadu and police jeeps were positioned along the border to warn vehicles against entering that state.

Most schools and colleges also remained shut.

In an interim order on September 5, the court had directed Karnataka to release 15,000 cusecs of Cauvery water per day to Tamil Nadu for the next 10 days to ameliorate the plight of the farmers there.
