Navjot Singh Sidhu, who resigned as a BJP parliamentarian on July 18, will be joining the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on August 15, Independence Day, sources in AAP have said.
Sidhu will be joining as a star campaigner and not the chief ministerial candidate for the party in Punjab, where elections will be held next year, sources said.
His wife, Navjot Sidhu, who is also with the BJP, will follow soon after, AAP sources said.
Sidhu, former Rajya Sabha MP and cricketer, on July 25 said that he quit from Rajya Sabha because the BJP leadership asked him to stay away from Punjab during the upcoming elections. He addressed the media at his CWG residence in New Delhi for the first time after he resigned from the Rajya Sabha on July 18.
Sidhu, who was a BJP Lok Sabha MP from Amritsar from 2004 till 2014, was asked to step down and allow party leader Arun Jaitley to contest from his seat during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Jaitley, however, lost the elections to Congress stalwart Captain Amarinder Singh.
