After the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission lead to an increase in the salary of the government employees, even the Parliamentarians are gearing up for a hike in their basic salary.
All that they await now is a crucial nod from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, following which the Parliament is likely the proposal in the monsoon session that began today and will end on August 5.
If the PM sanctions the changes, the monthly salary of an MP will double from Rs. 50,000 a month to Rs. 1 Lakh. The other benefits include monthly travel expense of the MP shooting up to Rs. 90,000 and annual furniture allowance for the lawmaker’s official homes to double to Rs. 1,50,000 a year.
Besides this, the lawmakers will get free broadband worth Rs. 1,700 per month at their homes in their constituencies and the monthly pensions for former MPs will rise from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 35,000.
Also, the basic compensation for a lawmaker will rise from Rs. 1,90,000 to Rs. 2,80,000.
If PM Modi approves the changes, this will be the first revision in the salaries of the Parliamentarians in last six years.
