The driver of the app-based cab threatened a 27-year-old woman from Kolkata that if she made noise, she would be raped.
‘Akdom chup! Toke kidnap kore rape kore debo (Shut up! I will kidnap and rape you),” the cab driver told the woman who had booked the cab from Salt Lake’s JD block at around 10 pm on Monday.
Realising his intentions, the woman jumped off the moving car. The driver immediately reversed and allegedly tried to run her over.
Later, the 28-year-old Santu Parmanik (driver) was arrested by the Kolkata Police. He is charged with molestation and criminal intimidation.
While narrating story to the police officials, the woman said, “It was okay till my friend got down near Aranya Bhavan. Suddenly, the driver started speeding up and took a left where he didn’t need to.”
As the cab reached Bijan Bhavan, the cabbie took to a left lane, to which she protested.
“The lanes were deserted so I insisted on taking the main road. He agreed and continued to drive till FD block, where he again tried to enter a lane on the left,” the woman was quoted as saying by ‘The Times of India’.
She protested again to which the driver replied “the lane would save time”. However, what alarmed her was when the cab went past the area she was supposed to get off at.
She immideately rolled down the window and shouted for help, but as road was deserted, no help came. Realising that she was alone, she jumped off the moving car.
She filed a complaint on Tuesday with Uber and Bidhannagar North police station post which Parmanik was arrested.
