A major accident was averted at Delhi airport on Friday when an Air India and IndiGo aircraft came close to each other.
The pilots of both the planes avoided a disaster by following Standard Operating Procedure, say sources.
The Air India aircraft was taking off and the IndiGo aircraft was landing. This close shave happened when Air India’s AI 156 with over 120 people on board was rolling at high speed to take off for Goa from IGIA’s main runway 28 at about 11.30 am.
The incident took place not long before Prime Minister Narendra Modi went to the airport to receive his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina.
“AI was taking off from Runway 28. At the same time, IndiGo was landing on merging Runway 27. The AI aircraft was asked to return and it took off later at 12:50 pm,” sources said.
