His death has made the authorities to suspend Amarnath Yatra and mobile internet services in the valley.

Besides, the authorities also imposed restriction in the entire district of Pulwama and in the towns of Ananatnag, Shopian, Pulgam and Sopore, officials said here.

Wani joined the Hizbul Mujahideen at the age of 15 after his brother was allegedly assaulted by securitymen in 2010.

Burhan had become the poster boy of new-age militancy. where educated youth from Valley took up arms after the 1990 uprising and trained themselves locally to wage a battle against what they saw as an “occupation”.

Burhan was known in almost every Kashmiri household by his name.

He was the star of jihadi videos where he persuades young Kashmiris to join the “holy war” with the “promise of a fulfilled life hereafter”.

Adept at working the social media, he used to encourage youth through video clips to open war against India.

He was from a well-off family in Tral in south Kashmir, his father is the head master at a government school.

There was a 10-lakh reward for information leading to his arrest.

In his death, security and political observers say, Burhan could become the rallying point of a renewed indigenous militancy and give rise to a potent theme for fresh recruitment.
