Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Monday during a party meeting said that the democracy, under the present dispensation, is going through one of its darkest hours.
Rahul Gandhi chaired his first Congress Working Committee meeting on Monday, as his mother and party president Sonia Gandhi skipped the meet due to her ill health.
“Attempts by government to suppress freedom by abusing state power will only strengthen our resolve to defeat such dangerous designs,”said Rahul.
Speaking about the ban on NDTV India Channel, Rahul said, “TV channels are ‘punished’ and asked to shut down. The opposition is being ‘arrested’ for holding government to account.”
The meeting, that was attended by top party brass, took stock of the current political situation and organisational matters and discuss its plan for assembly elections to other states including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa and Manipur next year.
The gained significance as the Winter Session of Parliament is starting from November 16 and the Congress will finalise its strategy for the session at this meeting.
The meeting may also discuss Rahul Gandhi’s elevation, which is likely to be delayed, as the Congress top brass is expected to further defer the process of organisational polls. Congress organisational elections had been postponed earlier by a year till this December-end.
The CWC meeting comes at a time when many feel Congress President Sonia Gandhi should hand over the mantle to her son as she is suffering from ill health, especially after her roadshow in PM Narendra Modi’s constituency of Varanasi on August 2 when she was hospitalised.
