Days after a woman techie was murdered at a city railway station, Chennai Police finally arrested the accused Ram Kumar on Saturday. This was one of the shoe-leather investigation that fetched the results.
The probe into the murder of young techie S Swathi on the platform of Nungambakkam railway station last week was definitely a messy case for the police. Almost after 72 hours, Police came with the only identifiable detail that was a common check shirt and black trouser.
June 24: Around 6.35 am, as Swathi entered the Nungambakkam railway station to go to her office, a young man was waiting for her platform 2. After a brief argument, he hacked her and fled at 6.42 am.
June 27: the Government Railway Police released two CCTV footages that vaguely showed the suspect. And the first clue came from Swathi’s friend, Mohammed Bilal, who said she had told him about a person stalking her. She told him that the guy was on the train on June 16 while she was travelling from Nungambakkam to Paranur.
Later, the officials accessed tower dump data from the mobile phone towers. What they got from there was certainly a tedious task as over five lakh calls made around this time. However, they short-listed 48 numbers that were common. Now, the team began tracing the persons using these numbers and finally they got one number with South Tamil Nadu address, and the data showed that a person had been in Choolaimedu, close to Swathi’s place.
After a series of disappointments and investigations, the police finally struck luck when a person at AS Mansion at Choolaimedu identified the boy as Ramkumar.
July 1: By around 11.20 pm, inspector Balamurugan and a team of four officials landed at Meenakshipuram and surrounded the house, wherein Ramkumar was sleeping in the backside. However, he tried to escape, police surrounded him and he was arrested late night.
July 2: The accused was arrested in Tirunelveli late last night. When police went into his house, he hid in the backyard and inflicted an injury on his neck by using a knife when surrounded by police. Ram Kumar was soon rushed to Tirunelveli Medical College hospital for treatment. A special probe team from had left for that city to take him into custody.
July 3: Amid tight security, Ramkumar was on Sunday taken to Chennai in an ambulance and will be produced in a court. In his statement, he revealed the real reason “”I murdered her because she insulted me for my looks.”
July 4: Ram Kumar to appear in court.
July 4: Ramkumar remanded to 15 days judicial custody
Although major part of the investigation was over, further investigations are still on.
