On his 96th birth anniversary, here we share some must-know facts about this majestic personality:
Introduced Raga Rock trend: It was his relation with Beatles guitarist George Harrison that aided the spread of Indian music in abroad.
Gave up dancing for the music: Young Pandit Ravi Shankar started as a dancer, he joined the dancing group of his brother Uday Shankar. Later, he gave up dancing and started learning sitar under the guidance of court musician Allauddin Khan.
Gave tunes to ‘Sare Jahan Se Achha,': In 1945, he gave his tunes to the famous patriotic song, written by Muhammad Iqbal in 1904.
Introduced raga Mohankauns: This new raga was his tribute to the father of the nation Mahatama Gandhi. It was a composition of three sargam notes that approximate Gandhi’s name–“Ga” (third), “Ni” (seventh) and “Dha” (sixth).
Bharat Ratna Awardee: He was awarded India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna.
